Barry Bonds moved one step closer to baseball history after equalling the single-season home run record against the Houston Astros.

Bonds is now level with Mark McGwire after hitting pitcher Wilfredo Rodriguez over the right-centre field wall for his 70th home run of the season in the ninth inning.

As he reached home plate, Bonds was engulfed by his fellow team-mates, as well as his son, Nikolai.

His achievement was fully appreciated by the Houston fans, who cheered him all the way back to the bullpen at Enron Field.

"I'm just glad it's over," said Bonds.

"It's a great feeling. Everyone was just telling me, 'Be patient.' I'm glad it's finally over. My wife can go to sleep now."

The strike helped his side, the San Francisco Giants, to a comfortable 10-2 victory.

Bonds has three more games to break McGwire's three-year record which he set playing for the St Louis Cardinals in 1998.

The homer also moved the left-hander to seventh in the all-time home run list to 564 home runs, past his cousin Reggie Jackson.

McGwire is fifth on the list with 582 home runs.

Earlier, Rickey Henderson of the San Diego Padres homered for his 2246th career run, breaking Ty Cobb's 73-year-record.
