Despite losing an emotional match against Tampa Bay, the Yankees still won their fourth straight American League East Division title, their fifth triumph in six years. Baseball was secondary at the Yankee Stadium as a 30-minute ceremony preceded the match, honouring the victims of the attacks in New York and Washington. Elsewhere, Bobby Higginson hit a three-run homer as Detroit overcame Kansas City 6-4 and Jeremy Giambi hit a three-run, pinch-hit double as Oakland beat Anaheim 9-3. National League Jeromy Burnitz and Richie Sexson each hit three home runs to help the Milwaukee Brewers past the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-4. Kevin Appier pitched a four-hitter for his first complete game of the season and Mike Piazza hit his 35th homer to lead New York Mets 2-0 over Montreal Expos. Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 21st homer and had three hits and two RBIs, and Joey Hamilton pitched five shutout innings, as Cincinnati beat Philadelphia 8-1. Rickey Henderson scored twice and moved within one run of tying Ty Cobb's record and helped San Diego overcome Colorado 8-7. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Other top Other Sports stories: Links to more Other Sports stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||
