The New York Yankees honoured the victims of the terror attacks in America as the side hosted their first match since the atrocities.

Despite losing an emotional match against Tampa Bay, the Yankees still won their fourth straight American League East Division title, their fifth triumph in six years.

Baseball was secondary at the Yankee Stadium as a 30-minute ceremony preceded the match, honouring the victims of the attacks in New York and Washington.

There was a moment of silence in honour of the thousands of missing people as players from both teams lined the baselines side-by-side with city rescue workers.

Yankees fan Mayor Rudolph Giuliani received a standing ovation before joining the players on the pitcher's mound.

Yankees manager Joe Torre said: "It was a subdued celebration but I still think it is a noteworthy accomplishment. And five times in six years is very good."

Tanyon Sturtze pitched seven scoreless innings to upstage Roger Clemens and helped snap the Devil Rays' eight-game losing streak at thestadium.

The title was claimed as Boston Red Sox lost 12-7 to Baltimore Orioles with home runs from Tony Batista, Chris Richard and Luis Matos.

The Yankees are trying to become the first team to win four consecutive World Series titles since they claimed five in a row from 1949-53.

Roger Clemens after meeting the rescuers

Clemens recorded his 3,702 strikeout to reach number three on the all-time list but his emotions were running high after meeting some of the Manhattan rescuers.

"It brings it all closer to home when you see their faces and eyes close up. I wanted to win it for them," he said.

"When you look into their eyes and shake their hands, you're at a loss for words."

Elsewhere, Bobby Higginson hit a three-run homer as Detroit overcame Kansas City 6-4 and Jeremy Giambi hit a three-run, pinch-hit double as Oakland beat Anaheim 9-3.
