![]() | Thursday, 10 May, 2001, 15:45 GMT 16:45 UK Hamburger tests positive ![]() Hamburger (left) won silver at the 1997 world c'ship Danish cyclist Bo Hamburger has been banned by his CSC-World Online team after testing positive for the performance-enhancer EPO. According to reports in Denmark, Hamburger has become the first rider to test positive for EPO under the International Cycling Union's (UCI) new testing procedure. The tests were taken on 19 April after the Fleche Wallonne race in Belgium. Team director Bjarne Riis dismissed Hamburger after being informed of the test results by the rider, who received the positive results on Tuesday. Tour success The team, which also includes France's Laurent Jalabert, has secured a wild card for this year's Tour de France, won by Riis in 1996. Thirty-year-old Hamburger has been a professional since 1994, when he won a stage on the Tour de France. He won silver at the road race world championship in 1997. Other career highlights include a Tour of Catalonia stage win in 1997, victory in the Fleche-Wallonne in 1998, when he also wore the yellow jersey in the Tour de France one day. |
