![]() | Saturday, 10 March, 2001, 10:54 GMT Aintree legend suffers heart attack ![]() Bob Champion after his emotional win on Aldaniti Bob Champion, the jockey who beat cancer to win the Grand National, has suffered a heart attack. The 52-year-old is said to be in a "comfortable" condition in a Cambridge hospital. Champion inspired cancer sufferers across the world when he overcame the illness to win the Aintree race on Aldaniti in 1981. He complained of feeling unwell on Thursday night after returning to his Newmarket home following a charity function in London. Earlier, he had appeared in good spirits when BBC Sport Online spoke to him to arrange an interview to mark the 20th anniversary of his famous win. Tests After his condition worsened overnight, an ambulance was called and he was admitted early on Friday morning to Addenbrooke's Hospital. Champion is expected to remain in hospital for several days for observation and to undergo further tests. Awarded an MBE in 1982, he is a tireless worker on behalf of the Bob Champion Cancer Trust, which has raised more than �6m to fund research into the illness.
