![]() | Sunday, 21 January, 2001, 18:09 GMT Mayweather impresses with Corrales win ![]() Mayweather hits Corrales with a left to the head Floyd Mayweather Jnr enhanced his reputation as one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world with an emphatic defence of his his World Boxing Council super-featherweight title. Mayweather knocked down fellow American Diego Corrales five times and retained his crown when the referee stopped their fight in the 10th round in Las Vegas on Saturday. It was a near flawless performance against the previously unbeaten Corrales.
"Tonight was just my night to shine," Mayweather said after his sixth successful title defence. "I told people that Floyd Mayweather Jnr is No.1 in the world pound-for-pound. I just showed the world that I'm the best 130-pounder in the world. "I'm 'Pretty Boy' Floyd. It was just my night." Trash talk Mayweather spent the weeks leading up to the fight taunting Corrales, who is less than two weeks away from going to court for allegedly beating his pregnant wife.
The build-up to the bout had been far from trouble-free, Mayweather firing his own father and turning down a lucrative long-term cable TV contract. But he completed his dream performance by embracing his father and walked off with a reported six-fight, $15 million deal with US TV station HBO. "I feel like I deserved to finish the fight on my feet or on my back," Corrales said when asked if the stoppage was premature. "I got back up and I kept getting back up. I've never planned after a loss and a first loss is hard to rebound from." | See also: Other top Other Sports stories: Links to top Other Sports stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||
