![]() | Saturday, 13 January, 2001, 11:42 GMT Cape joy for MacArthur ![]() Ellen MacArthur relieved to have passed Cape Horn Britain's Ellen MacArthur, the youngest sailor in the Vendee Globe single-handed non-stop round-the-world race, has become the second skipper to pass Cape Horn. MacArthur, 23, still trailed race leader Michel Desjoyeaux, of France, by more than 600 miles but was relieved to have passed this significant stage of the race. Over the past few days she has battled high winds and struggled with torn sails in her 60-foot Kingfisher.
But she said in a radio interview after rounding the Horn: "I feel quite overwhelmed. "I cannot help but feel moved. The thoughts of the past storms and struggles are far off at this point." MacArthur now heads north up the Atlantic towards the finishing line in Les Sable d'Olonne, France. MacArthur said: "I'm now looking forward to the Atlantic trip. "Firstly to be on the way home, and secondly to get the repairs done in warmer conditions." Torn sails Though 219 miles ahead of third-placed Frenchman Marc Thiercelin, she is worried that her progress will be slow until she can repair her torn sails. A fleet of 24 boats started the race from Les Sable d'Olonne on 9-17 November are still competing. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Other top Other Sports stories: Links to top Other Sports stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||
