China's Liu Chunhong broke three of her own world records to claim the women's 69kg weightlifting crown. The 19-year-old lifted a record 122.5kg in the snatch before raising the clean and jerk record to 152.5kg.
The combined weight of 275kg saw her break her own world record total, with Hungary's Eszter Krutzler in silver and Russia's Zarema Kasaeva in bronze.
Meanwhile, Turkey's Taner Sagir won the gold medal in the men's 77kg event after lifting a total of 375kg.
Sagir set a new Olympic record with lifts of 172.5kg and 202.5kg.
The silver medal went to Sergey Filimonov of Kazakhstan while Russia's Oleg Perepetchenov took bronze.
Liu's performance underlined her standing as one of the sport's rising stars.
"There was a bit of pressure but I have learned from previous lessons to be as relaxed as possible," she said.
The world number one bettered her previous world mark of 120kg set at last year's world championships.
And then toppled her clean-and-jerk record set in April this year by 0.5kg
The19-year-old's triumph in Athens saw her add to her world lifter of the year, world, Asian and Asian Games titles.
Liu's victory saw China claim their fourth weightlifting gold of the Games.
