Golden girl Jennie Finch inspired the USA softball team to a 7-0 win over Italy on the first day of action. Finch worked three scoreless innings, striking out five and giving up no hits as the USA began their bid for a third-straight Olympic crown.
Australia, who play the USA on Sunday, signalled their intentions with a 4-2 victory over Japan.
Canada beat Taiwan 2-0 and China downed host nation Greece, with their squad of mostly Greek-American imports, 5-0.
