Alipov did not miss a single shot in the final

Alipov was on target with all 25 shots to beat Italy's Giovanni Pellielo into the silver medal position while Australia's Adam Vella took bronze.

In the qualifying rounds, the in-form Alipov equalled the Olympic record.

Great Britain's Ian Peel, who won silver at the Sydney Olympics, missed out on the final after a disappointing qualifying display.

Peel, who won silver in Sydney in 2000, ended with a total of 116 out of 125 to finish back in 19th place.

The 46-year-old gave himself too much to do after under-performing on the first day of qualifying.

"It's definitely disappointing for me," said Peel.

"I shot steady all the way through, just not good and that was the problem. I never had a bad round but never had a good round either."

Peel identified a missed final shot during Saturday's second round of qualifying as he attempted to make up an early deficit as the pivotal moment.

"It was a big disappointment. That target cost me dearly, I felt it was the one target that really set my day up," said Peel.

"It put me so far back that I really couldn't recover from that moment."

Peel admitted that Athens would be his last Olympic Games.

"I'd have liked to have gone out shooting a better performance than this but at the end of the day I can only go out and try my best and it wasn't to be," he said.

"I could go on for another four years but I'm 46 now, I've been to three Olympics and I'm the oldest shooter here."

Peel's Great Britain team-mate Ed Ling also missed out on the final after his total of 113 saw him finish in 25th place.

Ukraine's Olena Kostevych won the gold medal in the women's 10m air pistol event.

The 19-year-old beat Jasna Sekaric of Serbia-Montenegro into silver by the narrowest of margins, while Bulgaria's Maria Grozdeva took the bronze.

Kostevych had to edge out Sekaric in a shoot-out after the pair finished level on 483.3 points.
