Omar Bravo's two goals were not enough for Mexico |
Mexico beat hosts Greece 3-2 in a hot-tempered thriller in Volos - but it was not enough to stop them crashing out of the Olympic football tournament. Two goals from Omar Bravo and one from Rafael Marquez were enough for the win, but other results went against Mexico.
The game between Mali and South Korea ended in a 3-3 draw, ensuring both teams progressed from Group A.
Elsewhere, Argentina topped Group C with maximum points after a 1-0 win over Australia - who also qualified.
The Mexicans' win meant they finished with four points and Greece one - a sad ending for the hosts after their senior team won Euro 2004 six weeks ago.
The Mexicans were celebrating within 90 seconds of the second half when Zinha passed to Marquez who slid the ball home with a low right foot shot.
And in the 70th minute, Spyridon Vallas failed to deal with a cross from the right and gave it straight to Ismael Rodriguez who passed to the unmarked Bravo who fired home from eight yards out.
Ioannis Taralidis' penalty after Vallas was fouled gave Greece some hope, but the Mexicans scored a third with five minutes to go when Ismael Iniguez sped down the right and crossed low for Bravo to slide home.
Ieroklis Stoltidis' injury-time strike was a mere consolation for Greece.
Elsewhere, Tunisia beat Serbia-Montenegro 3-2 thanks to a last-minute strike from Ali Zitouni - but it was not enough to keep them in the tournament.
