Germany's three-day eventing officials have hit back at the decision to strip Bettina Hoy of individual gold and the team of their gold medal. The Court of Arbitration for Sport awarded Britain's Leslie Law gold after judging that Hoy should have been punished for a timing infringement.
"What happened to fair play and Olympic spirit?" said Dieter Landsberg-Velen, Germany's equestrian association chief. "It makes me ill to think an error by the jury has cost us so dearly."
Andrew Hoy, a three-time gold medallist for Australia and husband of Bettina, said: "It's a sad day for sports. I think it's a shame the other countries would appeal."
Law admitted he had sympathy for Hoy, despite being upgraded to gold after her penalty points were re-instated.
"But it's a great result for the Brits all round. I'm very pleased for everybody."
