Canadian veteran Lori-Ann Muenzer overcame Tamilla Abassova of Russia to clinch the gold medal in the women's sprint on Tuesday. The 38-year-old outsprinted her young opponent in the first two races of their best-of-three final for victory.
Abassova, who earlier ousted world champion Svetlana Grankovskaya in the semi-final, had to settle for silver.
Australia's Anna Meares added to her 500m Time Trial success by beating Grankovskaya in the bronze medal match.
Victory over Abassova, 17 years Muenzer's junior, was also an Olympic first for Canada.
No Canadian woman had ever won a medal of any colour in the short history of Olympic track cycling.
The Canadian men have won five but none of them were gold.
The Canadians had also never won a gold medal in either Olympic road racing or mountain biking.
