Russia's Tatyana Lebedeva has added the Olympic women's long jump title to her triple-jump bronze. Lebedeva's second-round leap of 7.07m was good enough for victory, with compatriots Irina Simagina and Tatyana Kotova completing a Russia 1-2-3.
Simagina won the silver with 7.05m - the same as Kotova - but having recorded a longer second-best effort.
Britain's Jade Johnson jumped to a personal best of 6.80m, but it proved only good enough for seventh.
Johnson was disappointed with her performance on the night.
"I don't do seventh place. It has to be top five or I'm not happy," she said.
"That was probably one of the best long jump finals there has been with three over seven metres. I gave it everything, I just hope I haven't let my coach (John Herbert) down.
"My goal was to jump 6.90m and get a British record. I'm a bit gutted right now.
"There's no point in jumping a PB to come seventh. I don't think I'm ever going to be happy unless I'm getting medals."
Lebedeva was understandably delighted with her first Olympic triumph.
"After the triple jump my coach said to me that I must relax and not be afraid to compete. I have the complete set of medals now - gold, silver and bronze," said the Russian, who was second in the triple jump four years ago in Sydney.
American Marion Jones, who had high hopes of an Olympic medal, finished fifth with a jump of 6.85m.
