Great Britain's women's 400m runners all failed to advance to Tuesday's Olympic final. Christine Ohurougu was fourth in her heat behind world champion Ana Guevara in 51.00, just short of the 50.50 personal best she set in the heats.
Donna Fraser, who has struggled with injuries for the past three years, was seventh in her semi-final in 51.84.
Lee McConnell paid the price for going off quickly over the first 200m, finishing last in her race in 52.63.
"I probably went too fast," admitted Ohurougu, who has made a huge impact in her first season.
"I would have liked to have got to the final but I never expected to run as fast as I did in the heats and set another personal best."
McConnell said afterwards that the team would now try to focus on the relay.
"We've been running well so hopefully with a few days rest we can re-focus on that.
"I had to go out hard and give it a go as I knew it would take a fast time to get into the final," she said
American Monique Hennagan set the quickest time of the three semi-finals with an impressive 49.88 with Tonique Williams next quickest in 50.00.
