Malcolm felt unwell when he arrived at the training camp on 9 August |
British sprinter Christian Malcolm has been hospitalised with kidney problems at the Olympic holding camp in Cyprus. The 25-year-old spent five days in hospital with acute renal failure but has now been discharged and has resumed training ahead of next week's 200m.
"It was a serious condition, but the doctors, my coach, friends and family helped me stay positive," said Malcolm, who reached the 200m final in Sydney.
"Now I just want to run, enjoy it and see what happens."
British doctors insisted Malcolm's performance in Athens should not be affected by his illness.
"Fortunately all serious causes of the condition were ruled out and it seems likely that it was caused by a virus," said UK Athletics chief medical officer Bryan English. "As a result of Christian's physical fitness, his speed of recovery has been remarkable and he should now be able to compete in the Games."
Malcolm has a season's best time of 20.56 seconds over 200m and will carry British hopes alongside Darren Campbell and Chris Lambert.
