Britain's Paul Green boosted his bid for Olympic taekwondo glory by winning gold at the European Championships. The Athens hopeful, who is a world championship silver medallist, beat Russian Seyfula Magomedov in the final of the under 54kg category in Norway.
Magomedoc will be one of Green's main rivals at the 2004 Games in Greece.
Briton Charlene Mongalard also claimed a medal, taking bronze in the under 51kg event after losing to world champion Jenifer Delgado in the semi-finals.
"This is a fantastic result for both Paul and Charlene," said Sport Taekwondo UK performance director Gary Hall.
"In the final, Paul beat one of the serious challengers for an Olympic medal so he will go to Athens as European Champion and with a psychological advantage over one of his main rivals.
"His preparation is all going in the right direction.
"For Charlene to come so close to beating the World Champion was a great example of how far she has come in the past few months.
"What makes their results more exciting is that we've still got three days of competition to go and I'm sure theres more to come from our squad."
