Former World Cup winner Diego Maradona has been invited to take part in the opening ceremony for the Olympics, according to Fifa agent Eric Manasse. "We can't say he'll light the Olympic flame in the way Muhammad Ali did," said Manasse, who has been working with Maradona on various projects.
"But he will definitely run with the flame, perhaps with some children. He would really like to do that."
Maradona will visit Athens in May and then return for the official opening.
Once hailed as the greatest footballer of his generation, Maradona's life has been full of turmoil.
He was ejected from the 1994 World Cup for doping and succumbed to drug abuse following his retirement in 1997.
He has also put on a dramatic amount of weight.
The 42-year-old currently lives in Cuba, having gone there three years ago to seek medical help for his addiction to cocaine.
