Britain's coxless four won gold in rowing |
The chairman of the British Olympic Association says he has been impressed by the achievements of British athletes during week one of the Athens Games. Team GB started slowly but now have 20 medals, equalling their total medal tally from the 1992 Barcelona Games.
"It's been terrific this weekend," Craig Reedie told BBC Sport.
"Whether we win as many golds as we won in Sydney (11) is a different matter but certainly British sport has held its own in Athens."
So far Britain have claimed six golds, seven silvers and seven bronzes, far exceeding pre-Games expectations.
And although Reedie does not expect Britain to better their gold medal tally from Sydney, he says that is to be expected given the increased levels of competition in Athens.
"For rowing alone there are 16 or 17 different countries on the medal list and that demonstrates how the sporting world is changing.
"The standards are getting higher and higher."
Reedie has also been impressed by the staging of the Games and is gathering valuable information for London's 2012 bid.
"The venues in Athens are outstanding and the transport is working well. The clear lesson is you have to traffic-manage the city extremely well.
"I think you can do that in London and believe we'll have the transport system to match any rival bid.
"London is also more of a watching city than Athens so I think we'll have full venues across the board.
"Our plans are far more compact than those for Paris. There is also a much greater sporting legacy in Britain - we're a more enthusiastic sporting nation."
