Peel wins second GB medal
Peel - only one mistake in the final
Peel - only one mistake in the final
Shooter Ian Peel has won Great Britains second medal at the Sydney Olympics by claiming a silver.

The 42-year-old from Blackburn finished second in the men's trap competition at Cecil Park.

He became Britains first shooting medallist for 12 years.

Peel qualified for the six-man final in second place, four points behind leader Michael Diamond of Australia.

He had just a three-point margin over the joint fifth placing of Marco Venturini of Italy and Kuwait'' Khaled Al Mudhaf as Giovanni Tellielo of Italy took bronze.

With scores carrying over for the final round of 25 clays, Diamond was uncatchable and he retains his Olympic title.

But Peel showed great nerve to hold his silver medal position.

The 1996 European champion hit the first 14 targets before making his only mistake of the final round.

But it was Diamond who took the honours in front of a raucous home crowd with a magnificent 100% record.

China notched its first gold of the Olympics as 26-year-old shooter Tao Luna won the women's 10m air pistol after taking an Olympic record in the qualifying rounds into the final.

Yugoslavia's Jasna Sekaric won silver while the bronze medal went to Australian Annemarie Forder.

World record holder Jie Ren of China had been the favorite to win but she failed to make the final.
