There had been high hopes that the world number one from Manchester would bring home Britain's first-ever canoe/kayak gold. Few would have predicted that German Thomas Schmidt would obliterate the field on the 320m man-made course on both runs, and he had to settle for the runners-up spot. It is only the second ever medal won by Britain in the canoe/kayak discipline.
"I'm a little bit subdued and despondent," he told BBC Sport. "I set myself high standards and was after gold. "But he (Schmidt) was the better guy on the day - he was awesome. And I'm just pleased to have got the silver after capsizing." Ratcliffe's long powerful strokes set a blistering pace on the first run. Two errors cost him dear. The failure to negotiate the fourth lost him two seconds but he was still well up before disaster struck. Nerve After easing through the 23rd and final gate, Ratcliffe capsized and lost more valuable time.
The first run left him third at the halfway stage and 3.58 seconds behind Schmidt. Ratcliffe went for broke on the second leg and again incurred another two second penalty. But the Briton held his nerve to improve on his first time. That guaranteed him bronze but his time proved enough to overhaul Pierpaolo Ferrazzi, who was originally second after the halfway stage. He could then only hope Schmidt would capitulate, but that was not to be. Hindered The British pairing of Stuart Bowman and Nick Smith, ranked ninth in the world, came into the final run of the men's canoe doubles in fifth position.
The Britons were made to wait for the final four sets of competitors and were unlucky to lose their grip on second to finish fourth by just half-a-second. Slovak pair Pavol and Peter Hochschorner won the gold - Poland won silver and the Czech Republic bronze. | See also: Other top Rowing and Water Sports stories: Links to top Rowing and Water Sports stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||
