Britain beats Olympic tally record ![]() Lee Pearson heads for gold in Sydney Britain's Paralympic athletes have beaten their gold medal tally record which was set in Atlanta in 1996. On Saturday, they won four more golds to take their haul to 41 in Sydney. Three of the golds came from the equestrian centre at Horsley Park. Lee Pearson landed his third gold medal of the Paralympics when he took the Individual Dressage Grade One Freestyle event at the Horsley Park Equestrian Centre in Sydney on Saturday. Pearson scored a total of 73.45 points to land gold, but team-mate Dianne Tubbs had to settle for fourth place, missing the bronze by just .44 of a point with a score of 68.55.
Anne Durham, Lee Pearson, Kay Gebbie and Nicola Tustain were easy winners with Great Britain ending on 427.42 points. The Netherlands snatched silver on 416.58 points and Norway were third. Staffordshire's Pearson was delighted with his third gold medal in his first Paralympics. "I expected maybe one medal out of this competition but to go home with three golds is absolutely fabulous, wonderful," he said. "The horse was much more forward today, he excelled himself." Team manager Anne Cutcliffe paid tribute to all the riders under her charge. Wonderful "This has been a dream in the making for four years," she smiled. "For all the team members it's been four years of hard work but it's quite, quite wonderful." Great Britain reached 41 golds for the games courtesy of Pontypridd's David Roberts in the pool. Roberts created a new world record time of 28.58 secs in landing the S7 classification of the men's 50 metres freestyle. Deborah Brennan looked to have secured Britain's first track gold of the night with a comfortable victory in the T34 classification of the 400m. But she was later disqualified for running out of her lane. |
