Gardos overcame his tough opponent

Austria's Robert Gardos recovered from the brink of defeat to overcome Korean Ri Chol-guk 4-3 in the men's table tennis singles.

Gardos, who beat defending champion Ryu Seung-min in the team event, fought back from three games down.

In the women's competition, Miao Miao of Australia, who defeated Irina Kotikhina of Russia to reach round two, lost to Korean Dang Ye-seo.

Belarus' Viktoria Pavlovich beat Romania's Elizabeta Samara.
