Four young men will represent Jersey in the World Table Tennis Championships in Guangzhou, China, from 24 February.

Josh Band, 14, Luke Walker, 15, Chris Corfield, 17, and Craig Gascoyne, 25, will play in the fourth division of the bi-annual event.

The players have undertaken a secret training programme devised by sports scientist David Sutton.

Sutton said: "I have been very impressed by the young team's determination to perform well."

The team have been training for up to 20 hours per week in preperation for the event, which is expected to draw 9,000 spectators.

President of the Jersey Table Tennis Association Chris Band, who is travelling with the squad, said it was a "chance of a lifetime" for the players to compete in the "spiritual home of the sport".

"The boys will gain a huge amount of invaluable experience but they also have the abiolity to win individual and even team matches," he added.
