Great Britain's Jackson will now focus on the relays |
Joanne Jackson failed in her bid to add a 200m freestyle medal to her Olympic 400m freestyle bronze after finishing seventh in her semi-final in Beijing. But there was better news for British team-mate Caitlin McClatchey, who came third in her heat in one minute 57.73 seconds to reach Wednesday's final. Jackson, who won 400m bronze behind fellow Briton and new Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington, clocked 1:58.70. Michael Rock also failed to reach the men's 200m butterfly final. Three-time gold medallist in Beijing, American Michael Phelps was in Rock's semi-final and set a new Olympic record as the fastest qualifier in 1:53.70. "I am a little disappointed not to improve my time and place in the final," said Rock. "But I've dropped my time this week by a lot, which was the aim." | The medal took a lot out of me - I was still buzzing Olympic 400m freestyle bronze medallist Jo Jackson | British duo Hannah Miley, who finished sixth in a high-quality 400m individual medley final, and Keri-Anne Payne were both edged out in the 200m individual medley semi-finals. Miley said afterwards: "I gave it my all and I'm just over the moon with my swim." Payne, who now goes on to race in the open water 10k, added: "I might have made the final if I did a personal best but I'm not quite sure what went wrong." McClatchey goes through as the seventh fastest qualifier for Wednesday's 200m freestyle final and believes there is more to come. "I've made the final and that was my aim today, but I was looking for a quicker time," said McClatchey. "I've got a full day to recover now, to get focused and look at my tactics for the final." Jackson admitted that the excitement of collecting bronze on Monday had taken it's toll. "I just felt slow and uncomfortable," she said. "The medal took a lot out of me. It was difficult to sleep last night, I was still buzzing. "I am capable of going much quicker, so I am disappointed. But we've got a great chance in the relay and I will focus on that now."
