Adlington plays down medal hopes

Adlington broke the British women's record in the 800m freestyle in April

Nottinghamshire swimmer Rebecca Adlington says she is not taking Olympic success for granted despite her recent record-breaking form.

The 19-year-old from Mansfield shaved two seconds off her own British and Commonwealth 400m freestyle record at the ASA Championships in July.

She told BBC Radio Nottingham: "It's not something I tend to think about.

"Every swimmer is going into the Olympic Games with a clean slate. It doesn't matter anymore."

Adlington starts as one of the favourites in the 800m and 400m freestyle events.

She swam the fastest ever 800m freestyle by a British woman in April to break the longest standing British women's swimming record.

Sarah Hardcastle had held the record since 1986, but Adlington destroyed it by more than five seconds at the Olympic trials in Sheffield.
