Elsewhere, double Olympic champion Kosuke Kitajima set a new world record for the men's 200m breaststroke in Tokyo.

His time of 2:07.51 bettered the previous world best, set by America's Brendan Hansen.

"I'm only thinking about winning gold in Beijing and if I don't win gold I won't come back," said the Japanese swimmer.
