Tancock broke the world record in Sheffield last week |
Exeter swimmer Liam Tancock has squeezed into the final of the men's 100m backstroke at the World Short Course Championships in Manchester. Fresh from setting a new world record in the 50m backstroke at last week's Olympic trials, Tancock had the third fastest time in Wednesday's heats. But he only managed to qualify eighth with a time of 51.50 seconds "It's always going to be tough," Tancock told the BBC. "Racing's not easy and I snuck in to eighth place." The fastest qualifier was world number one Russian Stanislav Donets with a time of 51.35 who Tancock will compete against in Thursday evening's final. But Tancock said he has more to give: "I feel I'm in good shape and just enjoying the moment. I've got through to the final where anything can happen - I'll rest up and see what happens." "I'm pretty pleased with my performance coming on from last week's Olympic trials when I did some great times, and it's nice to come here in front of a home crowd," he added. There's coverage of the World Short Course Championships, including the men's 100m backstroke final on Thursday night, on BBC TWO, BBC Sport Website and BBC Radio 5 Live sports extra
