Tait now has Olympic places in the 100m and 200m backstroke |
Edinburgh's Gregor Tait set a new British and Commonwealth record as he won the men's 200m backstroke title at the British Championships in Sheffield. Tait edged out Loughborough's James Goddard in one minute 56.67 seconds as both took Olympic places in the event. Liam Tancock set a 50m backstroke world record during the 200m heats but was not trying to qualify for the final. Ross Davenport, Fran Halsall, Hannah Miley and Kate Haywood also won titles in Thursday's other finals. Swimmers have to achieve the Olympic qualifying time set by British Swimming in the heats and then need to finish in the top two in the final for selection. In order to replicate the programme in Beijing, heats are swum in the evening with the finals the following morning. Goddard finished just behind Tait in the 200m backstroke to take silver in 1:56.82. Guildford's Marco Loughran was third in 1:58.34, missing out on an Olympic place. Tait said: "I'm happy with my swim, and a new personal best after breaking the British record yesterday. "I went out too hard in the heats and didn't have much left in the tank at the end of the race so I was much better paced today." Garioch's Miley and Stockport's Keri-Anne Payne took the top two places in the women's 200m individual medley to seal their Olympic spots. | 606: DEBATE BBC Sport's Karen Pickering |
Birmingham's Terri Dunning and Lincoln's Lizzie Simmonds had also achieved the qualifying time but missed out on the Olympic places as they finished third and fourth respectively. Miley could not match her British record of 2:11.46 in the heats as she finished in 2:12.17. "It's awesome," the 18-year-old said of her Olympic qualification. "Now I'm in we can work on so many more different things to make it better for the Olympics." Loughborough's Davenport led from the start to win the men's 200m freestyle in 1:47.66, with Robbie Renwick edging out his Aberdeen team-mate David Carry to seal a spot on the team for Beijing. "I've been Commonwealth champion, fourth at the Olympics, fourth at the worlds, but I've never managed to win a British championship so I'm over the moon," said Davenport. Carry and Stirling's Andrew Hunter, who finished fourth, are set to join Davenport and Renwick on the relay team for Beijing. Haywood, from Loughborough, won the women's 100m breaststroke in 1:07.84, with Edinburgh's Kirsty Balfour taking second to join her on the Olympic team. Millfield's Georgia Holderness was third in 1:08.76. Liverpool swimmer Halsall, who sealed a 100m freestyle place earlier in the week, was the only swimmer to make the qualifying time in the women's 50m freestyle heats on Wednesday. And she confirmed her place in the event for Beijing by winning the final in a time of 24.79secs. Portsmouth's Katy Sexton finished second in a personal best of 25.51, and Plymouth's Emma Wilkins third.
