China grab dramatic shooting gold

China's Qiu Jian won the men's 50m Rifle 3 positions Olympic gold medal on Sunday after a stunning mistake by American Matt Emmons on the last shot.

Leading by 3.3 points, Emmons fired a 4.4 on his final attempt to drop to fourth. He blew a similar lead on his last shot at the Athens Games in 2004.

Ukraine's Jury Sukhorukov took the silver while Slovenia's Rajmond Debevec claimed the bronze.

It was the final event in the shooting, where 15 golds were up for grabs.

Britain's Jonathan Hammond finished a disappointing 42nd.

Hosts China finished the competition with five golds, followed by the United States, the Czech Republic and Ukraine with two each.

India, Finland, South Korea and Italy shared the remaining four.

And Emmons, whose Czech wife Katerina won shootings' gold and silver over the last week, was philosophical about the outcome.

"I did not feel my finger shaking, but I guess it was," said the 27-year-old.

"My display in Athens got everyone talking about shooting. I think this will bring the sport more attention.

"Having Katerina by my side is the most important thing. Whether I win or lose, she will always be there for me."

Qiu, meanwhile, admitted that his composure helped seal gold.

"The mental control comes from years of training," he said.

"The idea is not to think of the outcome. I did not know what happened at the end.

"When I heard the spectators cheering, I felt maybe I had won a silver. But my coach told me it was a gold."
