Sailors Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson have retained their Yngling World Championship title with a day to spare in Miami. The Beijing-bound trio won gold after gaining an unassailable lead going into the final day in Biscayne Bay. "In the past we've been in the same position, but have made a few mistakes," said Wilson. "This time, our experience helped pull us through." Shirley Robertson and her crew were 10th heading in to the final day. Weymouth-based Ayton and her crew of Webb and Wilson are now safe in the knowledge that, even with the double points-scoring medal race still to run, the world title is theirs. "We just sailed really consistently throughout the week," added Lymington-born Wilson. "We had some pretty tricky conditions and some big breezes and so our teamwork has really shone through." | 606: DEBATE RH |
Robertson, who now races with Annie Lush and Lucy Macgregor, split with Ayton and Webb after winning gold at the Athens Olympics in 2004. She took time off to start a family but returned with a new team in November 2006, though the trio were overlooked for this year's Olympics. Robertson wanted to use the Miami event to prove the selectors had made the wrong decision, but the winning trio, favourites going into the event, dominated the 28-boat fleet from the opening day of the regatta. The world title is Great Britain's third of the year after Ben Ainslie won the Finn Gold Cup and Elliot Willis and Nic Asher triumphed at the 470 Worlds in Melbourne last month.
