Thomson spent 94 days at sea with Andrew Cape in the race |
Gosport sailor Alex Thomson is celebrating a second-placed finish in the Barcelona World Race. The 33-year-old and his co-skipper, Andrew Cape from Australia, finished two days behind the winners Damian Foxall and Jean-Pierre Dick.
Thomson said: "It's been three months and the world is very big, but it's great to be home."
During the race, Thomson suffered a 48-hour penalty after stopping to repair a damaged rudder.
He said: "If we hadn't had a stop we might have been closer to winning, but it was good seeing the lights as we came in."
During the race Thomson and Cape broke the 24-hour distance record for a 60ft monohull yacht, covering 499.22 nautical miles.
Nine boats started the event, but only five have finished or remain racing, after damage to the vessels forced the rest to withdraw from the field.
