Highlights: GB double scullers take gold in Lucerne

Victory for Britain's lightweight men's double scull was set against disappointment at the second World Cup event in Lucerne.

Mark Hunter and Zac Purchase won, while and Matt Wells and Steve Rowbotham took silver in the openweight double.

But the world champion women's quad, and men's eight could only take bronze and the lightweight four were fifth.

Single sculler Alan Campbell came fourth in his event and the injury-hit men's four could only manage eighth.

"We did not get carried away with our five golds from the World Cup in Munich last month and today shows why," said team performance director David Tanner.

"There are crews here that weren't in Munich and different combinations in some events from other nations.

"The world has moved on and we know we need to work hard before, during and after the next World Cup in Poznan to do the best we can in Beijing."

The quad of Katherine Grainger, Frances Houghton, Debbie Flood and Annie Vernon knew they faced a tough task after defeat to China in Fridy's seeding race.

They blasted to an early lead but were pegged back by China in the last 300m and the USA slipped past by just under three tenths of a second.

"We tried to kill them off early but it didn't work," said Vernon. "We didn't have anything left at the end".

Grainger added: "When the challenge came we didn't have the answers."

The men's coxless four - missing out on a World Cup final for the first time in a decade after semi-final defeat on Saturday - failed even to win the B final, falling behind Germany in the last 500m.
