Coleraine men miss out on medals

Coleraine rowers Alan Campbell, Richard Chambers and Richard Archibald missed out on medals at the World Cup regatta in Lucerne.

Campbell led for much of the single sculls final but eventually took fourth behind Czech winner Ondrej Synek.

Mahe Drysdale of New Zealand was second while Sweden's Lassi Karonen was third.

Richard Chambers and his GB team-mates were fifth in the men's lightweight fours final with Archibald's Irish crew in sixth and last place.

British hopeful Campbell, who won last month in Munich, was strongly fancied for another World Cup medal after winning his semi-final on Saturday.

However, Synek won in 6:47.51 ahead of Drysdale (6:49.20) and Karonen (6:52.18) with Campbell clocking 6:52.64.

Norway's Olympic champion Olaf Tufte could only finish fifth in 6:57.91.

2006 World champions China showed they are right on target for the Olympics on their home territory as they won the lightweight men's four in 6:00.89.

The Chinese, repeating their victory in Munich, finished ahead of Denmark (6:01.33) and France (6:01.99) while Germany (6:02.64) also finished ahead of last year's world champions, the British (6:04.86).

Ireland, after encouraging performances on Friday and Saturday, will also have been disappointed with their sixth place in 6:07.89.

Chambers won world championship gold in the British boat last year while former world championship silver and bronze medallist medallist Archibald competes for Ireland.

Archibald and his Irish team-mates will be hoping to ensure their Olympic Games place at the qualification regatta in Poznan next month.

Like his British team-mate Campbell, Chambers has already secured qualification for Beijing.
