Monkey's animators at Passion Pictures have been hard at work creating the journey of Jamie Hewlett's Monkey for BBC Sport The team, led by animation directors Pete Candeland and Rob Valley, produce hundreds of sketches - and many more doodles Much of the work to produce basic line drawings of Monkey, Sandy and Pigsy is done in the dark An animator works on a sketch for a frame showing Sandy fighting off a monster en route to Beijing This piece of paper shows a frame of water animation, which will later to be turned into a sequence showing Sandy swimming Once the line drawings are complete, they can be turned into full-colour animation using computers Every line in each drawing must be complete before animators can move to computers to add colour The team need reference material to create backgrounds, so they use dozens of photos of China as inspiration On the wall of the animation studios you can see the storyboard for Hewlett and Damon Albarn's two-minute tale This chart tracks every sequence of animation, from the first line drawing to the finished product
