Woodbridge tipped for medal glory

Modern Pentathlon

Shropshire modern pentathlete Nick Woodbridge is being tipped to make the Beijing Olympics this summer.

Georgina Harland, a bronze medallist in 2004, believes Woodbridge and Sam Weale are both looking good enough to qualify - and even win medals in China.

Harland saw Weale win bronze and Bath-based Woodbridge finish eighth in the latest World Cup event.

She said: "It's a really exciting time for them both. They have a really realistic chance of qualifying."

If they do qualify they've got the potential to win a medal as well

"That was a great result for Sam, and remember Nick was on the podium at a World Cup event last year," she continued.

"They've both done well already this year and they've scored some valuable rankings points towards the Olympics.

"They've showed that it's not just about qualification. If they do qualify they've got the potential to win a medal as well."

There has been no British male modern pentathlete at the Olympics since Richard Phelps at the Atlanta Games in 1996.

"It's a really exciting time for the British men's team," Harland added. "They've taken a big step forward this year in terms of their qualification for Beijing.

"There's been a lot of talk in the last few years about the women's team, but I think the men's team are going to be talked about in the near future.

"They have to keep their heads together now, stay healthy and go out there and show the world what they can do."

The pair are now looking to add to their Olympic ranking points in the fourth round of the World Cup in Madrid.
