Olympic Dreams is following some of GB's stars aiming for 2008 and 2012. The second series begins in July and the team were in Austria following heptathlete Jess Ennis, when injury struck the medal hope

The 22-year-old from Sheffield was one of the favourites for gold in Beijing and entered the IAAF meeting in Gotiz, Austria in fine form. She came second in the 100 metre hurdles. Next was the high jump

During the high jump Jess suffered pain in her right foot. She received treatment from UKA physio Neil Black for what was then thought to be a soft tissue injury. She jumped 1.82m and 1.85m before stopping

Her right foot remained sore, but she continued with the third event in the shot put with coach Toni Minichiello sitting in the Mosle Stadium hoping Jess would pull through without any further problems

It was relief all round as Jess produced three successive personal bests. There seemed to be hope for the Brit who won Commonwealth bronze in 2006 and finished fourth at the Worlds last year

Jess finished the first day 36 points off the lead after a good 200m. But she was in pain and was forced to withdraw. Twenty-four hours later scans in the UK revealed a stress fracture to her right ankle

"I'm gutted to be missing my first Olympics," she said. But coach Minichiello said: "Jess has a long career that will sadly not include the 2008 Olympics but will include London 2012 and the 2016 Games."
