China's Xian Dongmei retained the tile

China's Xian Dongmei successfully defended the women's 52kg title she won in Athens with a narrow victory over North Korea's An Kum Ae.

The 32-year-old was always in control but only won by a single yuko, one of the lesser scoring moves in the sport.

Her victory gave the hosts their first judo gold in Beijing and brought the sell-out crowd to their feet.

Algeria's Soraya Haddad and Misato Nakamura of South Korea won the bronze medals in the 52kg play-offs.
