James Tindall's late goal secured Great Britain a 2-2 draw against hosts South Africa in the first match of their tri-nations tournament in Durban. The injury-hit Britain side, who are preparing for an Olympic qualifying tournament in March, fell behind to Ian Symons' 46th-minute penalty stroke.
Ashley Jackson equalised when he fired home a short corner seconds later.
Marvyn Ban thought he had won the match for the hosts but Tindall deflected the ball home two minutes from time.
Manager Pete Nicholson said: "We played well today on a difficult pitch which was half wet and half dry.
"Throughout our training sessions this week, a number of players have picked up minor injuries which meant that Richard and Simon Mantell, Brett Garrard, Graham Moodie, Stephen Dick and James Fair were all unavailable for selection."
That meant a first cap for Nick Catlin, while Barry Middleton played in his 150th international match.
Britain play Canada, who drew 1-1 with South Africa on Friday, in their next match on Sunday.
Canada and South Africa have already qualified for the Olympics, but Britain will need to win a six-team tournament in Chile in March to join them in Beijing.
