Bajramaj came off the bench and changed the game |
Germany beat Japan 2-0 to clinch the women's football bronze medal, with Fatmire Bajramaj scoring both goals. Substitute Bajramaj opened the scoring on 69 minutes when she slotted in from a rebound after keeper Miho Fukumoto had parried Kerstin Garefrekes' header. Bajramaj had only been on the pitch for 10 minutes at that point, and 19 minutes later she scored again. After twisting to find space in the box, Bajramaj beat Garefrekes at the near post with a low effort. Until Bajramaj's introduction, the world champions had endured an exasperating night in the drizzling rain as their attacks constantly broke down. "We definitely needed a change at half-time and we tried to get things going with Fatmire Bajramaj and Conny Pohlers and they gave us more attack in the second half," German coach Silvia Neid said. "I am happy with getting the medal as in the first half we did not have the forward play as we did throughout the tournament. "Our forward play was not good enough, we didn't pass as well as usually do, but our defence was okay."
