Melissa Wiik's second goal in as many games booked a quarter-final place for the Norway women's football team after they beat New Zealand 1-0 in Group G.

Wiik headed home after eight minutes off an inch-perfect cross from Leni Larsen Kaurin on the right wing.

The Norwegians have now taken maximum points from two matches and set a new record of six games unbeaten at the women's Olympic football tournament.

The Kiwis will now need a win over USA in their final group game to progress.

Elsewhere in the group theUSA got their bid for a fourth consecutive gold medal back on track with a 1-0 win over Japan in Qinhuangdao.

Carli Lloyd's thunderbolt from the edge of the area put the USA ahead on 26 minutes to help her side bounce back from their opening defeat to Norway.

Both Christie Rampone and Ami Rodriguez missed good chances to extend the lead further in the second half.

Japan's best effort came when Yuki Nagasato hit a long-range shot wide.

Over 52,000 fans watched in Tianjin as hosts China shared the points after a 1-1 draw against debutants Canada in Group E.

Canada's all-time top scorer Christine Sinclair continued her good form with a calm finish past Yanru Zhang on 34 minutes.

China hit back quickly though when Xu Yuan ran on to a superb pass from Lou Jiahui, rounded Canada keeper Erin McLeod and passed the ball into the net.

Earlier, Sweden dominated their game but could only manage a 1-0 win over Argentina.

Goalkeeper Myong Hui Jon's poor control from a back pass left Brazil's Daniela with the easiest of finishes to give her side the lead on 15 minutes.

The advantage doubled seven minutes later when Marta capped a flowing Brazilian move by stealing in front of the on-rushing Jon before swivelling to fire home.

Ri Un Gyong's tame shot from 25 yards on 82 minutes was North Korea's first effort on target, a fact that exemplified their paucity of chances.
