Tagliariol wins Italy's first gold medal of the Games

Matteo Tagliariol won Italy's first gold of the Beijing Olympics by beating France's Fabrice Jeannet in the final of the men's epee.

The world number three defeated the world number two 15-9.

Spain's Jose Luis Abajo picked up the bronze by seeing off the challenge of Hungary's Gabor Boczko 8-7.

Venezuela's Silvio Fernandez, who is the world number one, lost to Boczko in the last eight. China's Weng Lei, who won silver in Athens, went out early.
