China's Wang Fen and Qin Kai added yet another gold to the host's Olympic tally with a dominant display in the men's synchronised springboard diving.

They beat the Russian pair of Dmitry Sautin and Yuriy Kunakov into silver, with Ukraine's Illya Kvasha and Oleksiy Prygorov taking third.

Britain's Nick Robinson-Baker and Ben Swain finished seventh out of eight.

"Other than a mishap on one of our dives we had a great competition," said Robinson-Baker.

"I couldn't ask for anything else from my first Olympic Games."

Swain added: "I didn't even look at the scores, I was just so excited to be at the Olympics - and to be here diving with one of my best friends, I'm just chuffed.

"We were just 12 points off a medal and on another day we could have got our reverse dive spot on - and that would have put us on the podium - but it was just so tense out there."

The British pair were third after round one but fell away as the competition progressed.

Robinson-Baker rejected any notion that the judges had been harsh with their marks for the British pair.

"Diving is a subjective sport - we can't do anything about the way the judges scored us," he said. "We were pleased with our dives and so were the crowd and that's all that matters."

However, Team GB's national performance director, Tim Foley, was less reserved in his analysis and claimed there had been too many "glaring errors".

"If you understand the judging better than me then you are an expert because I can't explain it," he said.

"We are getting crucified and I don't know why. The boys missed one dive a little bit and they finished seventh - some of the other teams missed two dives and they are above us. I think it's reputation.

"They should have been right in the middle of going for medals and they didn't get a look in. They finished 10 or 12 points off a medal.

"I can't work it out. They dived better than that. There are a lot of people scratching their heads."

Swain, though, already had his eyes set on his next Games appearance.

"We're going to be so much better in four years," he said. "As soon as we get home we're going to have a short break but after that we'll be straight back into training with the aim of success at London 2012 in our minds."
