Evans still hopes to play a part at the Olympics

Tour de France runner-up Cadel Evans will not race in the Olympic time trial after injuring his knee when he slipped on a wet floor at a team dinner.

Three-time world champion Michael Rogers will ride for Australia in the time trial on 13 August but Evans could still compete in the road race.

"I can still make a significant contribution to the team effort for the road race," Evans said.

He will decide by Monday whether to ride the road race on 9 August.

The extent of the injury has been revealed after Evans saw a specialist and had scans.

"I slipped on a wet floor on Sunday night and my team [Silence Lotto] doctor immediately had a look at it and said not to worry," said Evans.

"But on the flight home my knee began to swell up so I had to consider going to see a specialist who recommended cancelling my ride in the criterium in Belgium in favour of getting some scans done.

"It's not a major injury but it's something I will have to manage carefully."
