Price is the eighth British boxer to qualify for the Olympics |
Liverpool super-heavyweight David Price clinched a place in Britain's Olympic boxing team by beating Romania's Cristian Ciocan in Athens. Price outpunched Ciocan to claim a 15-6 win in the semi-finals of the final qualifying tournament. But fellow Liverpool fighter Stephen Smith failed to make progress. The featherweight lost his semi-final 17-8 to Italy's Alessio di Savino - the third time he had been one victory away from qualifying for Beijing. Price becomes the eighth boxer to qualify for Britain's Olympic team. The other seven are are Frankie Gavin, Joe Murray, Bradley Saunders, Tony Jeffries, Khalid Yafai, Billy Joe Saunders and James DeGale. GB coach Terry Edwards said of Smith's defeat: "Smithy's heartbroken. He's put so much into the last two qualifiers. To fall at the final hurdle three times is tough to take."
