Cavan boxer John Joe Nevin has secured a place at the Beijing Olympics after defeating Ukranian Maksym Tretyakin 32-16 in Pescara in Italy on Friday. The 18-year-old bantamweight joins Belfast light flyweight Patrick Barnes who had already booked his place. Two other Irish boxers were one fight away from a place at the Olympic Games. John Joe Joyce from Athy lost 25-20 to Romania's Ionut Gheorge at light welter and Ken Egan fell 17-13 to Ramazan Magamedau of Belarus at light heavy. Holy Trinity's Cathal McMonagle, Darren Sutherland and Ross Hickey all lost at an earlier stage of the qualifying tournament.
