Australia's women maintained their bid for Olympic basketball gold with a comfortable 90-62 victory over South Korea to top the Group A standings. Guard Penny Taylor and centre Suzy Batkovic led the way for the unbeaten Opals with 18 points apiece. Meanwhile, Anete Jekabsone-Zogota scored 25 points, including a lay-up with seconds left, as Latvia claimed a narrow 79-78 win over winless Brazil. In Group B, defending champions the US recorded an easy 97-41 win over Mali. Hosts China defeated New Zealand 80-63, while Spain were 74-55 victors over the Czech Republic.  | 606: DEBATE | In the other match in Group A, the unbeaten Russians booked their place in the quarter-finals by defeating Belarus 71-65. Australia are widely regarded as the only team capable of preventing the US from claiming their fourth Olympic title. But Australia coach Jan Stirling denied the competition was a two-horse race, saying: "Neither I or (American coach) Anne Donovan feel like that. We still have a lot of hard yards to do."
