Tracey Hallam moved into the last 16 of the women's badminton singles after seeing off the challenge of Kristina Ludikova to win 2-0.

The 33-year-old, ranked 14 in the world, won a tight opening game 21-18 before winning the second 21-13.

In the women's doubles the British pairing of Gail Emms and Donna Kellogg fell at the first hurdle.

They lost 21-19 21-12 to the Chinese world number two duo of Zhang Yawen and Wei Yili.

Emms and Kellogg led 11-10 at the first game interval as they traded points with their Chinese counterparts.

However, it was Zheng and Wei who came out on top and despite a brave fight from the British pair, they had little trouble in closing out the match as they comfortably won the second game.

"It's my last Olympics and my last championships. It could have been our last match together.

"We really rattled them. We would have love to beat them but it wasn't to be," she said.

Defending Olympic women's doubles champions and number one seeds Yang Wei and Zhang Jiewen had little trouble in progressing as they beat Indonesia's Vita Marissa and Liliyana Natsir 21-19, 21-15.

Ireland's Chloe Magee was beaten 21-12 21-14 by Korea's Jaeyoun Jun in the women's singles, while defending champion Zhang Ning survived a scare to come through and defeat Thailand's Salakjit Ponsana in three sets.

The number two seed from China lost the opening set but recovered to beat Ponsana 21-23 21-17 21-7.

There were no such problems for world number one Xie Xingfang as she completely outclassed her opponent from Taiwan, Cheng Sha-chieh, to win 21-1 21-9 to the delight of the partisan home crowd.

Hallam will meet Germany's Huaiwen Xu in the last 16 as she looks to book a place in the quarter-finals.
