Video - Thorkildsen defends javelin title Norway's Andreas Thorkildsen won his second consecutive Olympic men's javelin title with a throw of 90.57m. Latvia's Ainars Kovals jumped two spots with a final throw of 86.64m to win silver, with Finnish world champion Tero Pitkamaki (86.16), third. Thorkildsen sealed his second Olympic gold with his fifth attempt in the final, setting a new Games record. It marked a return to the sport's summit for him after silver medals at the last two World Championships. "I was in shape today," said Thorkildsen after breaking the Olympic mark of 90.17m set by Czech Jan Zelezny in 2000 at Sydney. "It has been a strange season, but I knew I could get the distance. I was doing it in practice but not in competition. "So I chose the right time and place to put it all together." Pitkamaki said: "Of course I wanted gold, bit I'm happy. It's an OK result for this season - I have had a lot of problems and injuries."
