Video - Latest Sotherton action Britain's Kelly Sotherton finished the opening day of the heptathlon in third place after some mixed performances. The world bronze medallist claimed a personal best in the first event, the 100m hurdles, and repeated that feat in the last of the day, the 200m. But the 31-year-old had a disappointing high jump and shot competition to finish the day on 3938 points. American Hyleas Fountain leads on 4060 points, with Natalia Dobrynska of the Ukraine second on 3996. Sotherton ensured she finished the day on a positive note with 23.39sec in the 200m, bettering her previous best of 23.40, to finish second in her heat behind Fountain. But she told BBC Sport she was less than satisfied with her day's display. Cannot play media. Sorry, this media is not available in your territory. Interview - Kelly Sotherton "I am so disappointed, I'm really gutted," she said. "I am in much better shape than that. "I'm in the mix but I expected to win that 200 in under 23 seconds. It's another day tomorrow." The 200m helped to make up for a poor shot put, in which she could only manage 13.87m to slip down to fifth place. Dobrynska moved into medal contention by throwing 17.29m, which put her into the lead before Fountain regained the advantage in the 200m. Sotherton had got her campaign off to a flying start when she earned 1097 points for her time of 13.18 seconds in the 100m hurdles. | 606: DEBATE Ex-Olympic javelin medallist Steve Backley on Sotherton's weakest event |
But Fountain stormed to victory in 12.77 seconds and also triumphed in the second event, the high jump, where she cleared 1.89m with Sotherton managing only 1.83m. Carolina Kluft, the reigning Olympic and world heptathlon champion, is not competing in the event, having chosen to concentrate on the long jump and triple jump. Sotherton took bronze at last year's World Championships, but it could have been silver had she performed better in the javelin. That event is one of three on Saturday, along with the long jump and the 800m.
