Nelson is competing in his first Olympics |
Stoke sprinter Alex Nelson says he does not expect to medal at the Beijing Olympics, but he is happy to learn from the experience. He told the BBC: "It's the main aim of any athlete who ever competes to get to the Olympics and then maybe one day win a medal. I'm no different. "I don't think I will win a medal but I am going out there to perform well and progress for the coming years." Nelson begins his campaign in the 200m on Monday. The Beijing Games will be the first time that Nelson will compete in a senior event for the British team but he says he will not be overawed by the occasion. "This is the first time I have run at a senior major championship but it seems to be that some things never change. Whether or not I enjoy it will depend on how well I perform." The 20-year-old from Hanley is joined in the British athletics team by his sister Ashlee, who is part of the 4x100m relay squad. "To experience the Olympics with Ashlee is great and the two people who are most proud are our parents."
